Last night I cooked a big pot of
Pinto beans.
When they were almost done
cooking I added a pinch of
Baking Soda to the pot. . .
. . .cause that's what Mom
always does;
she says "her Mom" said it makes them
"less gassy".
It's been my personal experience that
this DOES. NOT. WORK. AT. ALL.
Still, I do it because
"that's what Mama does".
Sometimes we're creatures of habit,
sometimes it's just a matter of tradition.
With each pinch of soda
I feel I'm giving a "high-five"
to the other women in my family
who have come before me.

Do you have anything(s) you find yourself doing
"just cuz Mama does it that way"?

I do the following because my grandmother did it: Rinise off the outside the the milk jug, orange juice container, pickle jar or any jar, when I come home from the grocery then paper towel it dry because you don't know who all handled it and where their hands have been. Silly huh?
That's a good question! I have taken lots of "mama does it this way" traits such as folding towels (her way). The one thing that doesn't make sense but I do because she does...toss the first waffle off the waffle iron. Now, my daughters do the same thing.
My mama is deathly afraid of birds, I mean p.e.t.r.i.f.i.e.d. - me - I'm OK with them - don't love 'em - don't hate 'em, but, I'd rather not be around them (at all). It's silly I know, but my sis and I are both the same way. We can walk through a parking lot or whatever and not cower in fear - mom cannot - but none of us love birds though!
Happy Hump Day -
I put Coke in my beans because my momma did. It too is supposed to make them less gassy. It DOES NOT WORK but I do it anyway. I also put a 1/4 cup of vinegar in with the blue jeans when I wash them so they won't fade. AGAIN IT DOES NOT WORK but I do it because my mommer did it. What can I say. I do as I'm told and then keep on doing it.
I tear up cereal and cracker boxes before I put them in the trash. Mama did it because it takes up less space in the trash bin. There are lots of stories about this very thing. Some are really funny. Great post.
I just found your blog. I also learned that I'm almost from the south(well, my grandfather was a glass blower from WVA). I think his town was right about the red line on your map. Anyway, we always sat on the porch and drank homemade wine from mason jars when visiting Uncle Joe and Aunt Mary. I fold my towels like my mama, but I never thought about it before. I also put a bit of sugar in homemade spaghetti sauce. When company comes, we always pile coats on the bed.
My momma washes ziploc bags, plastic straws and plastic cutlery in the dishwasher, which I always did growing up, too. I didn't realize how weird it was until college.
Loving reading what "Mama does".... I have few things I do the way she does, and that is probably not a good thing.
My mom insisted that I rub the ends of the cucumber after I cut it off so it wouldn't be bitter. I told her I didn't think it would make a difference but I still had to do it.
I'm sure a do a ton of things because that is the way my mother or grandmother did them. I'm not even aware of what they are, they are such a part of me.
I am still laughing!
There are probably a million things I do each day that make absolutely no difference!
That makes me laugh too!
Enjoyed visiting,
Laura
Just about EVERYthing I do int he kitchen and/or laundry room is because 'that's the way my mama does it'. I love my mama!
